Madam C.J. Walker Product Line for the National Archives Store
I had the honor of designing a product line for the National Archives Store celebrating the legacy of Madam C.J. Walker. The project centered on a signature scarf, where we reimagined and refined the MCJW monogram—transforming the initiative into a complete rebrand that reflects Madam C.J. Walker’s elegance and enduring influence. The design extended beyond the scarf to a full collection, with elements repurposed across a tote bag, bandana, zippered pouch, t-shirt, hoodie, and additional merchandise, creating a cohesive and elevated brand experience. These products can be purchased online at the National Archives Store website.
Research and Inspiration
It was essential that the designs authentically reflect Madam C.J. Walker’s remarkable life, accomplishments, and lasting influence. Through in-depth research into her story, I developed a concept that captured the breadth of her achievements and passions. Each design element represents a meaningful milestone—from honoring her daughter A’Lelia, to incorporating the Indianapolis state flag, where Walker launched her business, to celebrating Villa Lewaro, her iconic estate near New York City where she hosted legendary gatherings.
Illustration and Logo Redesign
Conceptualizing and sketching the scarf design also inspired the redesign of the MCJW logo, which was integrated into a custom illustration of Madam C.J. Walker with her niece and colleagues in a Model T Ford—the first Black woman documented to own and drive the automobile. The illustration draws from the historic 1912 photograph of Walker behind the wheel, symbolizing her pioneering spirit and determination.
Each design element was drawn directly from Madam C.J. Walker’s life and legacy. The border and interior illustrations were inspired by a vintage MCJW hair product box, while the floral motifs reflect her well-documented love of flowers, adding both historical and personal resonance to the collection.

Colors and Typography
The color palette and typography were carefully selected to symbolize royalty, versatility, independence, and resilience—qualities that defined Madam C.J. Walker’s extraordinary journey. These choices honor her achievement as the first Black female self-made millionaire in the United States, who revolutionized the Black hair care industry and built a thriving business from the ground up.
